A sustainable, community-centred school

Willow Grove Primary School, Bedford

Willow Grove Primary School is a newly constructed four-form entry (4FE) school designed to accommodate 840 pupils.

Built in line with the Department of Education’s (DfE) output specification, the school is situated on a 3.4-hectare site in Wixams, Bedfordshire, within Village 3 and part of the Kingsbridge Educational Trust. Committed to sustainability, the school has achieved Net Zero in operation, powered by 400 solar panels and featuring innovative solutions such as electric Bunsen Burners.

The school also incorporates significant provisions for active transport, including cycle and scooter parking, and its community-use sports pitch reinforces its role within the local area.

Pick Everard, operating via Perfect Circle, was appointed by Bedford Borough Council under the SCAPE Consultancy framework and delivered project management, quantity surveying, NEC supervisor, and principal designer services on the project, working closely alongside principal contractor Willmott Dixon.

The Challenge

The project was delivered in 27 months to ensure readiness for the September 2024 school term. Despite weather-related challenges in February 2024 causing delays, the team successfully completed the school on time. Pick Everard collaborated closely with Bedford Borough Council, the client, and principal contractor Willmott Dixon.

The Solution

Over 400 solar panels were installed on the roof to enable the school to generate its own renewable energy, achieving Net Zero operational carbon status. The site includes no gas infrastructure, relying instead on electric heating and air source heat pumps. Upgraded cycle lanes and enhanced facilities encourage green travel habits among pupils and staff. A sports pitch designed for community use further supports integration with local housing growth and educational needs.

The success of the project was acknowledged by winning the regional Constructing Excellence Collaboration and Integration award.
